Tink

Redesign and evolution of the Metro mobile app.

Tink entrusted us with the redesign and ongoing evolution of My Metro, the loyalty and promotions mobile app of Metro, a leading grocer in Quebec and Ontario with nearly 600 stores. We also developed the Super C and Food Basics apps.

Context

Building loyalty, one basket at a time.

In the grocery business, competition is largely driven by loyalty and promotion tools. Metro needed to reach a broad and diverse customer base on mobile, one not necessarily used to apps.

The constraint Bring loyalty, promotions and the grocery list together in a simple experience, while integrating with the company's loyalty programs and existing systems.
An experience

All in one.

Loyalty card The metro&moi card always in your pocket: linked by scan, shown at checkout and added to Apple Wallet.
Coupons Coupons loaded directly onto the card, flexible coupons, scratch coupons and reward cheques.
Grocery list Synchronized across devices and shareable, even offline in the store.
Flyer The week's deals from the preferred store, with banners managed remotely to match the campaigns.

Mandate

Simple for customers, agile for the team.

Appcom's challenge was to redesign an existing app so it could reach thousands of users, not necessarily used to mobile apps, and offer them an experience useful enough to adopt every day. User experience and interface were at the heart of the project.

The app also had to let Metro's teams update home screen content and promotions quickly, in step with their campaigns.

What we did

An app that evolved every month.

Alongside the Tink agency, we handled the redesign and then the evolution of Metro's native iOS and Android apps. Tink wrote the requirements and designed the experience; our team estimated each project, developed it on both platforms, tested it and published it to the app stores, release after release.

The app had to serve three loyalty programs, in Quebec as well as Ontario, and remain useful in store, even without a network. We connected it to Metro's systems, from loyalty to promotions, notifications and emails.

A digital loyalty card: linking by scan, display at checkout, Apple Wallet and digital card creation. Coupons added directly to the card, flexible coupons and gamification with scratch coupons. Reward cheques and digital discount vouchers, with consent, history and alerts. The favourite store's flyer and a synced, shareable grocery list. Product scanning with health attributes, and electronic receipts. Remotely managed banners, targeted notifications, an offline mode and a bilingual interface.

For Tink, we also developed the Super C and Food Basics apps: coupons, flyer, grocery list, sign-in with email, Facebook or Apple, offline mode and multi-flyer support. Some projects were shared with Metro, such as the add limit common to all six apps, gamification, banners and notifications.

Impact and results

In step with the grocery stores.

A new in-store experience The app let Metro roll out promotions built around exclusive coupons, encouraging frequent visits to its nearly 600 grocery stores in Quebec and Ontario.
A new release every month Going native streamlined the product's evolution: the iOS and Android versions adapted quickly to customer feedback, with an update published almost every month.
